Earlier this year I stared jotting down descriptions of art I came across, mainly from books I‘d read and films or tv shows I’d watched. Most of them popped up when I least expected and I loved hearing these different perspectives on my favourite topic.
So, I have compiled a list of my 2017 finds to share with my tiny, but very lovely music network. I know some of you will appreciate them. They are perfect examples of how wordsmiths can bring to the surface sentiments you had bubbling away somewhere - those which you never understood, or knew how to express. Mine are beautifully displayed below, by people with an authentic and contagious love for creativity. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
I also happen to think art is the most important thing in the world, especially for those who were born with the streak. To suppress it, or ignore it’s call can be extremely destructive and really just quite sad. I think these quotes are important, so best to get sharing.
Hopefully I will remember to do the same next year. I dedicate this post to all art lovers everywhere. Long live art.
'I then need all my art to hide my distress or clothe it in the prevailing fashion.' Albert Camus
‘Life isn’t a support system for art. It’s the other way round.’ Stephen king
'Adler believed it not only possible to write poetry and literature after Auschwitz but that it was necessary, for only with the full engagement of the imagination would it be possible to elicit even a glimmer of the true nature of what had been suffered and, yes, survived.' paraphrase H.G. Adler by Peter Fillings
'I think it’s the pain and suffering that make you become an artist. The art itself should be the pain, sort of exercising every demon and making you feel like a person that matters.' Marylin Manson
‘Here however, you made art because it’s the only thing you’ve ever been good at, the only thing, really, you thought about between shorter bursts of thinking about the things everyone thought about; sex and food and sleep and friends and money and fame. But somewhere inside you, whether you were making out with someone in a bar or having dinner with your friends, was always your canvas, it’s shapes and possibilities floating embryonic ally behind your pupils. There was a period, or at least you hoped there was, with every painting or project when the life of that painting became more real to you than your every day life, where you sat wherever you were and only thought about returning to the studio, when you were barely conscious that you had tapped out a hill of salt onto the dinner table and in it were drawing your plots and patterns and plans, the white grain moving under your fingertips like silt.' Hanya Yanagihara - A Little Life
‘An artist is someone who enters into a competition with God.' Patti Smith
'I'm very happy to hear that my work inspires writers and painters. It's the most beautiful compliment, the greatest reward. Art should always be an exchange.' Nick Cave
'It was like being called to duty – I was called to duty and I did my duty as best as I could.' anonymous
'In the end, I'm not interested in that which I fully understand. The words I have written over the years are just a veneer. There are truths that lie beneath the surface of the words... truths that rise up without warning, like the humps of a sea monster and then disappear. What performance and song is to me is finding a way to tempt the monster to the surface, to create a space, where the creature can break through what is real and what is known to us. This shimmering space, where imagination and reality intersect... this is where all love and tears and joy exist. This is the place. This is where we live.' Nick cave
'The painting was telling me what I needed to know about my life a year before'
'Service to your subconscious'
'I think what makes someone an artists is they make models of their inner life. They make something physically come into being that is inspired by their emotions or their needs or what they think the audience needs.'
'Free from the future, free from the past, free from regret, free from worry.... I love being alive and art is the evidence of that.' All Jim Carey
‘The least you can do is go into the arts. I'm not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practising an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven's sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possible can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.’ Kurt Vonnegut,
'The whole point of creative expression is to hold up a mirror to the world so hopefully these god awful people can start to see themselves and make connections to help them get through their dreary arse lives. Your pain is important to other people.' - 13 reasons why
‘Art is supposed to be a question mark.’ Marylin manson
